SMARTPHONE TECHNOLOGY IMPROVES ACCESS TO EYE CARE

Dec 14, 2015

Over 600 million people worldwide are blind or visually impaired because they cannot afford, or do not have access to, eye and vision care services.  New technology based on smart phone imaging  costs far less and may address a major global health issue in remote areas of the world.

The technology allows a health worker to take photos of the retina (inside part of the eye) and then forward to eye doctors located off-site.  The doctors can then make decisions as to the specific treatment needed based on the images.
