What Are Progressive Lenses?

Progressive lenses are advanced multifocal lenses that correct for distance, intermediate, and near vision,  all in one seamless lens. Unlike traditional bifocals or trifocals, there are no visible lines, giving you more natural vision and an aesthetically pleasing look. 

They're ideal for patients experiencing presbyopia, a common age-related condition that affects near vision, typically starting after age 40.

Progressive lenses require more vertical space than single-vision lenses to work properly. The frame you choose affects:

Top Features to Look for in Frames for Progressive Lenses

When you're choosing frames for your progressives, we recommend focusing on:

  • Lens size: At least 25-30mm from the top edge to the bottom edge 
  • Full-rim or semi-rimless designs for lens stability 
  • Adjustable nose pads for personalized comfort – even the smallest adjustments matter with progressive lenses! 
  • Lightweight materials like titanium or acetate for all-day wear 
  • Durability for everyday use, especially if you’re active

Frames to Avoid with Progressive Lenses

While personal style matters, some frames can hinder progressive lens performance. We usually advise patients to avoid: 

  • Very narrow lenses (they limit usable lens space) 
  • Deep curved or wraparound styles (they may distort vision) 
  • Poor-fitting frames (can cause misalignment and eye strain)
