Genetic Test for a major eye disease now available at MVO

July 29, 2019

Did you know that certain vitamins have been found to be helpful for age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?  What you may not know is that these same vitamins may actually increase the risk of vision loss for certain people!  Vitarisk® is a test designed to determine what specific nutrients should be taken and which should be avoided, for those who have certain types of AMD.

Read about a new study  that discusses the  strong correlation between genetics and nutritional supplementation  HERE
It’s also possible to determine the 2, 5 and 10 year risk of vision loss based on your genes (Macularisk® test).

AMD is the leading cause of acquired vision loss in North America and results from a combination of genetic and environmental risk factors. There are things that can be done to reduce your risk from this common condition.

Vitarisk® and Macularisk®  involve a simple process done at our office where we harvest cells from the inside of your cheek using a swab, then the sample is sent off for analysis.  Both are now available at MVO – discuss with your doctor during your next eye exam.
