Since the landmark studies about diet, nutrition and prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), we have updated information about the role of zinc as a dietary supplement. Zinc was one of the nutrients studied in AREDS 2 – which proved that daily intake of specific anti-oxidant vitamins reduced the risk for vision loss in patients with certain forms of AMD.
Studies on human genetics as they relate to risk for disease has determined that as many as one in six people may have a gene that could increase their risk for vision loss from AMD if they consume excessive levels of zinc. For this reason, our doctors recommend that if you have not had genetic testing done, and you have been advised to take an AREDS 2 supplement, that you take one that is zinc-free.
We now carry Vision Essence Zinc-Free supplements for those who fall into this category. We also offer genetic testing if you have macular degeneration, or are at risk for it, and wish to know your long-term prognosis and how to specifically tailor your vitamin intake.
